To date, one of the grossest things I've eaten in Japan has got to be raw horse meat (sorry Aunty!). I ate it at a sushi train joint in Shimokitazawa, Tokyo with the lovely Mads a while back. Both of us thought it was whale: "What a steal! 120yen for whale!"
And then when I ACTUALLY ate raw whale, IT became the grossest thing I've eaten so far. Cooked, it's not bad. But raw, in all its bloody mess.. I had to gag.
So now I bring you the SCARIEST thing I've ever eaten in my life - live whitebait. Poor lil guys..
Along with a cup of vinegary, tasty sauce, you also get a wee cup of these fellas swimming quite beady-eyed and expressionless (thank gawd - can you imagine if they could pull puppy dog faces?). With any luck, your meal won't be as active as mine (they were jumping in and out of the cup, onto the table.. MESSY) and you can spoon a few into the sauce.
Then you slurp 'em before they die.
The sauce was tasty.

That's like some sort of Klingon food. I thought you liked the raw whale we ate? I can't really say I was impressed with Whambi myself.
The cooked whale was good, but the raw stuff was a bit hard to swallow..
Oh no!! Poor little whitebait! :( Some food textures I can't deal with eh? Like boiled chicken skin... or... wriggliness!
I don't think I could ever willingly eat something alive and still moving! Heh... did you ever watch that Korean film Oldboy? Quite an interesting eating scenario there too!
Lea, I decided to try it as they were fairly small.. "while in Japan.."
SaM told me the story of Oldboy and it definitely isn't a Me-Friendly movie! Can you IMAGINE how disturbed I'd be!
