August 24 - Tranquil fun for everyone in Hida Takayama

Hida Takayama

飛騨高山 Hida Takayama. I had no idea what to expect from this place, but as we all know, "Expectations are bad!" It was a 6 hour bus ride from Shinjuku to Hida Takayama so thankfully I had a very lovely lady next to me. We had a big old chat about stuff and turns out she's a bit of a traveller herself. She's a junior high teacher in Hida Takayama. She's been to Utah and stayed with some mormons - who ate chocolate as well. I thought caffeine was not allowed but maybe chocolate's an exception, I mean, this is CHOCOLATE we're talkin' about here!

Anywho, I've got her contact details so that's cool :)

These are scenes from around Hida Takayama. Once again, mousing over the pics will result in some sort of description..

Around town:

asaichi, morning market one of the rivers another river photo traditional looking street shunkei style lacquerware - made to show off the grain sailor suit shop, DAVE!
sanmachi, a little Kyoto in the mountains   balls of something to ward off illnesses and bad luck
trees in sanmachi   bridge dude with long arms. I think he's for protection reasons too. Opposite him is a dude with long legs

Food in Takayama

Outside Ebisu, a 110+ year old soba noodle shop design of chopstick packaging in Ebisu noodle shop Interior of Ebisu noodle shop Dars extremely yummy dark chocolate

Takayama Jinya - rebuilt version of the former government offices of yore

What it looks like from the front part of the building part of the garden torture chamber. The basket was to carry prisoners in. The blocks at bottom right and the ridged things in the middle were torture devices. people were made to kneel on the ridged things, or blocks were placed on their legs. there's a nasty looking bamboo cane at the back. shows how roofs were made in those days. I bet the AirNewZealand hangar's roof coulda done with a bit of weighting down a few weeks ago! also goodluck symbol to guard against fire.Rabbits run fast during forest fires you see.Though a tourist pointed out that these bunnies were a little chubby so they might a little slow during a fire. family crest of Tokugawa Shogunate hook thing to adjust temperature when heating stuff

Shrines and Temples around Hida Takayama
