I ate: fish testes

Went out for a work dinner yesterday with people from Singapore, the US and the UK. It was a very international affair, with Japanese, English AND Cantonese spoken. Yay!

I should have taken photos of the food but felt a little uncomfortable bringing the camera out. Plate after handmade plate came out with wee servings of beautifully presented (and delicious) Japanese food. It was like a squillion-course Japanese degustation menu.

We also had PERFECTLY cooked paua. I had totally forgotten it was called anything else and kept on going on about "paua" until it dawned on me that it's also called "abalone".

Whatever, I've never had it cooked like that before. It was salt baked/steamed on top of some wakame (kelp) in its shell. Not rubbery, not squishy, just perfect!

Another memorable dish was the melt-in-your-mouth butter-fried fish egg things which were shaped like mini brains. At least, I was TOLD they were fish eggy things until my boss looked up the word in his dictionary and showed the screen to us:

TESTES

Well, I guess "fish eggs" were sorta close.
