So there's a tree outside my room, a few metres from where my head is when I sleep. It's FILLED with cicadas. These lovely creatures like to start their mating calls, or whatever it is, at 6 in the morning, coming to a sudden, deathly silence at 8:59, 9:59 or 10:29AM. Weird.
So in order to get a decent sleep-in, I've resorted to ear plugs. Take THAT!
The following is to be read in a David Attenborough voice:
Some cicadas produce sounds louder than 106 dB (SPL), among the loudest of all insect-produced sounds. (This amazing sound has frequently inspired haiku poets in Japan to write about them.) They modulate their noise by wiggling their abdomens toward and away from the tree that they are on.
Here's my own haiku:
Oh sweet cicadas
How I would love to, LOVE to
Firebomb your tree.

I wonder what would happen if you say...doused them with water?? Are you the bug-killing type? It doesn't faze me one-little-bit.
Last year in our town we had an unusually large population of かめ虫 - you know, the stink-bugs?? They were everywhere!! ...and always on my washing even though I'd flap the hell outta it before bringing it inside :(
The insidious かめ虫 is a dangerous, evil creature...
Are your stink bugs stinky? THAT would be awful - especially on freshly laundered laundry.
I'm grateful that the cicadas are just staying IN their tree and not attempting to enter my open window (no bug screen installed).
I don't like killing large bugs. They leave a mess.
