Unfortunately...

... I can no longer say that I feel slightly safer in Osaka than I do in Wellington.

It appears that globally, groups of young males in vehicles think that it is appropriate to yell at women who are walking by themselves.

Give me a drunk salaryman to deal with any day.

Oh no!

That's awful, I hate it when they do that.

:( Poor you. Hope it doesn't happen too often

Thanks. Normally I get ignored, due to blending in quite well with the general population.

Though, several weeks ago when I was walking with my friend (neither of us were talking at the time), I had this idiot wave his hands in front of me and ask "Where are you off to? Wanna go to karaoke?"

I'll show you where YOU can go, buddy...

What happened to deferential politeness in Japanese society?

It's a load of crockery with the youth of today's Japan.

Even in stores, the young folk are unable to do the quick switch between polite and impolite language, appearing quite offensive to older Japanese, or to foreigners who understand the language.

There's actually a campaign in the trains at the moment to encourage people to speak more quietly. It's got cool retro images of characters with big hair thinking to themselves things like: "OMG, I was talking in such a loud voice to my friend about an upcoming test and the woman next to me said 'Good luck for that!' -- how EMBARRASSING!!"
