A fishy breakfast
This morning my host mum warned me about the fish we were about to eat for breakfast. "It's very very spicy!" she said. I said I'd be fine as I like spicy food. Little did I know that she had meant SALTY - the word karai (からい) can mean both salty and chilli spicy. And dayum, lemme tell ya, that fish was SALTEEEEEEE!
It was saba fish pickled in sea salt and rice flour. She had brought it back from her home town of Tottori which is west of Osaka. She says that because the people of Tottori work very hard, they need lots of salt to keep them going so they eat lots of this fish. It was pretty yummy but yeah, extreeeeemely salty!
