Singapore: Day One

It's been 20 years since I last came to Singapore (beyond its airport). The last vague memory I have of the country has something to do with a toll booth, me slouched in the back seat of a car, moaning about something while wondering when my mum was going to pass me some crunchy cereal chocolate.

After an uneventful, leggy-roomed flight with Northwest Airlines (their logo is a big NWA which makes me smile, as it reminds of the hiphop band by the same name), who surprised me with their rather palatable rice noodle dish with prawns and coriander, I arrived in Singapore and made it to my bro's place.

It's HUGE. His bedroom is as large as my whole place. His entrance foyer is as big as my bathroom and toilet combined. AND, he has two bathrooms.

It's not as hot here as I thought it might be. It's still much cooler than Tokyo.

Tuesday's food:

  • Breakfast: nasi lemak rice with a million different curries including a yummy beef rendang that had nice chewy gristle. mmmm.. miscellaneous cow bits... Also had chicken rice and a kopi.
  • Snacks: Guava juice, kueh lapis, kueh kosui, kueh talam, strawberry ripple ice cream sandwich which gave my bro and I flashbacks to when we were very little. I wonder what they put in ice cream here to give it that distinctive Malaysia/Singapore feel..
  • Dinner: chilli crab dumplings, drunk chicken, kai lan with Hong Kong special sauce, pork and shrimp dumplings, braised beef noodles

.. and then, at 9pm, we saw Gwen Stefani live in concert.

I'm not a mad fan of Ms. Stefani, per se, but I do like some of her songs. And I knew that she would put on an awesome show. She is a very, VERY lovely performer, thanking the audience constantly, and my favourite part was when she ran into the audience, sitting on people and getting pawed at by everyone. I was very close to her at one point. It was obviously a G-rated gig, as she censored some of her songs. Although I think she forgot at one point.. heh.

See photos.
